Food

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park,South Africa,November 2009

These are some of the things I love about travelling....
Experience new tastes and discover new food.

When we travelled to KTP for the first time we already new reports about the "famous" roosterkoek you are able to order at the reception of Nossob Restcamp.
Of course this was something we wanted to try.
So arriving at reception and checking in, we ordered two roosterkoek right away.
We were told that they are going to be delivered to our chalet after gate closing time.

So after a lovely sunset drive we waited with anticipation.
Someone knocked on our door and handed over a plastic bag with two, still hot, roosterkoek.
I just can not describe it.
The smell, the excitement, the joy to cut them in half and to finally be able to taste something we were looking forward to for quite a while...
We tried them with butter and salt and with cheese and apricot jam.

They were simple, but absolutely divine!

Sitting on your doorstep in the Kalahari, watching the evening sky, listening to Lions and Jackals in the distance, eating roosterkoek is, I think the ultimate luxury.

Delicious Katja. Do you also make it yourself when in the Kgalagadi?

Katja, that is the ultimate of the Kalahari desert - simplicity that takes your senses on a magic carpet ride!!!

Roosterkoek has simple ingredients, but it took some practise to get them cooked to perfection. The secret is in patience - again another lesson the Kalahari teaches. The secret in cooking roosterkoek lies in the coals - they need to be very, very gentle, as hot coals will burn the outside and leave the inside un-cooked.

Hot roosterkoek with butter and whole, green preserved figs (another delicacy of the Northern Cape) is our ultimate Nossob spoil. Afterward, your chin drips a buttery syrop!!!! Yum!!!

Another great place for roosterkoek - the garage shop at Kakemas as you cross the Orange River bridge!!!

And question...have you tasted Skuinskoek yet??? A must on your next visit to KTP - I am sure the ladies at Nossob will be only too happy to make that for you. Take some whole Aniseeds with for them - they will know what to do...

Mmmmmm, delicious! We learnt about these two visits back and packed a jar of apricot jam especially for our Nossob part of the trip.

No, Gwen I never tried to make them myself... I always feared that they may turnout blackened on the outside and still raw inside,lol....
I made some kind of flat bread, using instant yeast, and preparing them in one of those heavy potjie on the gas stove.
They are not bad especially when eaten still warm with butter..
They may not be too pretty, but they are tasty, you can ask Lorinda and Andries ;-)

Have a look...
